Ocean // October 2021

A poem.

I am an ocean, hemmed in by the skin of my shore
Stretched wide like a grin before the Sun
Warmed like the one, tiny child bobbing
Near my elbow, giggling at
The shapes the clouds make

I am an ocean, soul still under surface storms
Home to creatures as yet untold, like
Dreams and stories swimming wild in the mind
Of their Maker, like
Songs not yet hooked onto a page

Tell me, are you offended by high-tide when I
Tilt and crash my will against the sand
When I stand and make my presence felt ’til
You move your shoes and blanket back or perhaps
Head home

Or do you only enjoy me when you dally in the shallows,
A heckling gull snatching shells and trinkets, unaware
The true treasures lie in the deep, that
To find them, one must brave the waves and
Dive in
